Have you ever thought about why diets don’t work?
When you think of diets, they often seem temporary or only last for a set period of time.
I have to say that I have done my fair share of “diets” in my lifetime, and the one thing that I noticed is that they last for a little bit, sometimes even up to 1 year, but eventually the diets end.
There are so many different types of diet’s out there. Here are some to name a few :
- Paleo Diet
- I Quit Sugar Diet
- Atkins Diet
- Intermittent Fasting Diet
- If It Fits Your Macros Diet
- Meal Replacement Shakes
- The Air Diet .. nah just kidding, that’s not a real diet! Well – let’s hope not!
Anyway so what do all of these diets have in common?
They are somewhat restrictive or tedious to maintain in the long run.
Don’t get my wrong, I think if someone wants to change their eating habits by following one of these diets, I think that is a great thing.. BUT.. do people really change their eating habits?
I remember when I was on the paleo diet, once a week I would have a total BINGE on chocolate, ice-cream, pizza, donuts, chips etc because the diet was so restrictive!
I would probably eat more junk food that I normally would if i wasn’t cutting the food out of my diet.
When I was doing Intermittent Fasting, I would fast until midday and then eat huge amounts of food for my first meal because I hadn’t eaten since 8pm the night before.
I tried meal replacement shakes in the past, and they tasted foul! Don’t get my wrong – you can actually lose weight on these shakes, but they don’t teach you any new eating habits or how to change your lifestyle.
You have the shakes and you lose weight.
You stop having the shakes, you put the weight back on.
It is a terrible and vicious cycle.
So what is my one, simple change that can help you lose weight forever?
Ok ok.. so what the hell am I on about?
What do you mean by “Quit Dieting”?
Well it is exactly what you think it means. Just stop.
Stop what you are doing.
Instead of dieting, the key to success is changing the way you eat. Slowly changing your habits, one small step at a time.
If one day you feel like eating a piece of cake.. go ahead – eat that piece of cake.
The aim of quitting the diet is to remove the feelings of restriction and pressure you put on yourself when you are undertaking a diet, because sooner or later, you are going to want that nutella donut.
And then you feel bad – you feel the guilt. WHICH YOU SHOULDN’T.
By quitting the diet, you focus more on adding healthy changes into your lifestyle.
Instead of saying to myself, today I am cutting out biscuits and cookies at 3pm, my goal for the week is:
Have healthy snack options ready and prepared at work.
Do you see the difference?
If i focus on not eating that cookie.. all i will be thinking about at 3pm is..
“Don’t eat the cookie.. don’t eat the cookie.. don’t eat the cookie.. DAMMIT.. i ate the cookie!”
Instead what we do here at Help For Fitness and in the Busy Girl Guides, we focus on making positive changes in our lifestyle that we can keep for the long run.
I am proud to say, i have finally quit dieting – and it feels so good! Come join me on the sunny side of town.
